Goalkeeper John Collinson was the hero last night as York City intermediates booked their place in the third round of the FA Youth Cup with an epic penalty shoot-out win over Darlington at Bootham Crescent.

With the sides locked at 1-1 after 90 minutes and extra-time, the Quakers' youngsters moved into the driving seat when Adam Russell's third spot-kick for City was saved.

It left Darlington needing to score their final two penalties to go through but Collinson sprang to the rescue producing two fine saves.

With Leigh Wood and then Chris Gowen both converting their spot-kicks for the City teenagers, York finally sealed victory and will now face Huddersfield Town in the third round on December 7 at Bootham Crescent

City had taken a deserved first-half lead after 20 minutes through Gary Ormston only for Adam Rundle to level matters early in the second-half for Darlington.

Collinson also produced two-finger-tip saves to deny the visitors a winner in normal time.

Delighted head of youth development Paul Stancliffe said: "I thought we just shaded the first-half but they made us work very hard after the break.

"I was delighted with the attitude and commitment of the lads. There was a lot of tired legs out there but nobody folded."

Collinson will be back in action for City reserves tonight in their Avon Insurance League division one encounter at Scunthorpe United (7pm).

Dutch trialist Theo Gunnissen is also named in an experienced squad alongside the likes of Wayne Hall, Kevin Hulme and Alex Mathie.

City reserves: from Collinson, Thompson, Reed, Fielding, Stamp, Hall, Turley, Hulme, Gunnissen, Mathie, J Williams, M Williams, Skinner, Hampshire, Boyce and Barry.
