THERE was cannon fire at Canon Lee School when members of the English Civil War Society arrived to bring history to life for Year 8 pupils.

Pupils at the York school were given an insight into life during the war, including arms and armour, the type of food available, the role of women and medicine and medical knowledge.

The day was led by a group called Historical Services to School, based in Leeds, and formed part of Year 8's history syllabus.

They also talked about what is was like to take part in a battle and put on demonstrations of firing muskets and a cannon.
