A woman was killed and her passenger, a retired GP, was seriously injured in a two-car crash on the A19 near Selby.

Police said the woman driver of a red VW Passat died at the scene of the accident, which happened just before 4.30pm yesterday at the junction of the A19 with the southerly entrance to Riccall.

The badly-injured passenger, Dr Alan Robson, of Leeds Road, Selby, was taken to York District Hospital where his condition today was described as "stable."

Police have so far declined to release the identity of the dead woman until next of kin have been informed.

Nigel Soffe, 37, of George Terrace, Barlby, who was driving the other vehicle - a grey Ford Sierra - was taken to York District Hospital with multiple injuries. His condition was described today as "stable".

His passenger, Sam Barrett, 17, of the same address, suffered shock and arm injuries. He was also taken to hospital, but later discharged.

The woman driver, who is believed to be from the Selby area, was pronounced dead at the scene despite the efforts of paramedics.

Selby firefighters used hydraulic cutting gear to free the woman, and also had to cut free Mr Soffe from his Sierra.

The A19 was closed for several hours, and traffic was diverted through Riccall village.

Police are appealing for witnesses, and anyone with information should contactTraffic Constable Steve Hugill at Selby Police Station on 01757 702596.
