In near perfect rugby conditions Malton gave a display of high quality to destroy visitors Barnsley 49-13.

Home skipper Chris Creber grabbed a hat-trick of tries in his final game before he goes to Australia for six weeks.

Malton's defence stood fast early in the game then their pack began to dominate, with Ed Gwilliam prominent in most of the action.

Ian Mansell provided the overlap to race home from 50 yards out. Within seconds of the restart Creder scored after a mix-up in the Barnsley defence.

Malton's tactics of driving the ball at the opposition to tie in the defence before releasing to the backs had the visitors in almost total disarray.

The next score came from forward drive and hooker Steve Hayhurst was accredited with the touch down which Andy Newsome converted.

Creber carved his way through for his second try to give Malton a 22 point half-time lead.

In the second half Mansell streaked away for his second try. The conversion and a subsequent penalty took Malton over 30 points and heralded the arrival of the three substitutes.

Barnsley took advantage to score two tries and a penalty, both tries coming after misunderstandings in Malton's defence.

Arthur Wilson, having probably his finest game in Malton colours, got a well deserved try.

Malton's forwards then drove for the line and the loudest cheer of the day was released when veteran prop Steve Riddolls, on as a substitute, crashed over for a try in the corner.

In the dying minutes a mix-up in Barnsleys defence saw Creber snatch the ball in mid-air and gallop over for his third try. Newsome converted.
