Civic guests at Huntington School's awards ceremony turned the event into something of a family affair.

The Lord Mayor of York, Shan Braund and the Sheriff, Barrie Ferguson, were guests of honour at the York school's annual event last night.

Coun Braund's husband, Martin, was a biology teacher there for many years, and their two children, Stephen, now at Oxford University, and Hannah, who took her A-levels this summer, were both pupils.

Mr Ferguson taught history at Huntington for more than 25 years before his retirement.

Head teacher Chris Bridge told guests at the University of York's Central Hall that he was proud of the way the school worked "year in, year out" to achieve at such a high level.

This success was put down to the support of parents, staff and a real sense of shared purpose.

He also highlighted extra-curricular activities at the school in a power-point presentation, which included photographs of pupils in front of the Brandenburg gates, in the foothills of the Matterhorn, in Barcelona, in the trenches of the First World War and at Wembley.

Looking to the future, he said the school now needed another modern classroom block to replace 16 mobile classrooms, to cope with growing numbers in all years and 275 in the sixth-form, as well as better facilities, particularly for drama and music.
