York City Baths Club youngster Tom Southam has smashed a championship record which has stood for eight years.

Competing at the Bradford Christmas Cracker meet, Southam broke the record in the 14-year-old 200metres individual medley by nearly a second to take gold.

His time of two minutes 14.10 seconds beat his old personal best by nearly two seconds.

It proved to be an outstanding weekend for Southam as he picked up the top boy award in the 14yrs age group to complete a fine season.

He took silver in the 100m freestyle with a pb time of 56.61 and was third in the 100m butterfly in another pb of 1.02.87.

He also reached the final of the 100m breaststroke and backstroke, finishing fourth and sixth respectively.

The only other gold medallist from York City Baths Club was Robert Kinnel in the 11yrs 100m breaststroke in a pb of 1.25.73.

He also collected third place in the 100m butterfly, just outside his pb of 1.16.24, which he recorded in the heats, and sixth in the 200m individual medley.

Jenny Hoggard collected a bronze medal in the women's 100m butterfly in a pb time of 1.07.55. She equalled her pb when coming fifth in the final of the 200m butterfly and was eighth in the 200m individual medley final.

Sarah Kinnel was fourth and fifth respectively in the women's 100m and 200m breaststroke and eighth in the 100m freestyle.

Andrew Fowler was fourth in the 200m individual medley, seventh in the 100m butterfly, sixth in the 100m breaststroke and fifth in the 100m freestyle, all in pb times.

Marie Walker and Mairi Macdonald were sixth and eighth respectively in the final of the 14yrs 100m breaststroke, while Anna Skilbeck earned a pb time and seventh place in the 14yrs backstroke.

Julie Watson was eighth in the women's 200m butterfly final.

A total of 53 pb times were recorded by York swimmers, including Joanna Feasby, Rachael Stotten, Ashleigh Husband, Alice Sunderland, Sarah Walker, Lauren Mason, Sabrina Rapp, Mark Howart, Sophie Calpin, Gawain Ng, Christopher Burns, Judith Evans and Eilidh Macdonald.

Meanwhile, York Masters had a good weekend at the Amateur Swimming Association National Masters Championships at Ponds Forge, Sheffield.

Richard Smith collected three silver medals in the 100m individual medley, 100m freestyle and 100m backstroke.

Nadine Thrower was fourth in the 50m backstroke, fifth in the 100m backstroke and sixth in the 50m butterfly.

James Hubbard was ranked 12th in the 100m backstroke.
