An investigation was under way today after 26 people were taken to hospital following a chemical leak at a factory near Selby.

Two employees at Yorkshire Fresh Salads, at Camblesforth, were overcome by fumes and were on the verge of passing out.

Firefighters and five ambulances were called to the site yesterday afternoon after workers began to feel ill.

The company said there had been a leak of chlorine, used on the factory washing lines to kill bacteria in lettuce.

Workers were affected by breathing difficulties and stinging eyes, and two employees suffered asthmatic attacks.

Ambulance crews administered oxygen and eye irrigation to affected staff before taking them to York District Hospital and Pontefract General Infirmary.

The area was sealed off so investigations into the incident could take place.
