THE ubiquitous Internet has also come to the rescue of dog breeders. Foot and mouth has cancelled Crufts, so an alternative is being staged on the World Wide Woof.

Owners send pictures of their pooches for publication on a Pocklington firm's website. Crufts' TV host Peter Purves will then name a supreme champion from home. There are other advantages to a virtual reality Crufts.

No poop to scoop, and Fido's feed cannot be spiked by unscrupulous rivals. But Mr Purves will have to be on the look-out for competitors with an extravagantly shiny coat or an unusually wet nose.
