I DON'T care what Matthew Arnold (1822) and Bryan Marlowe (Feb 27) think about cats, for we 'love 'em'.

How dare Bryan call them sadistic and snooty creatures who only favour when they want food and drink.

We have two lovely cats and they keep us great company, are clean and loving and, as I keep a vegetable patch dug, use our garden as their toilet.

They have been neutered, are never let out at night and often follow us lovingly into the village. They have always had collars with their names on, and bells to warn birds of their approach. At least they keep vermin down and can be left to their own devices without bother.

I presume Bryan is a dog lover. Obviously he has never been bitten by a dog, often trod in their disgusting mess and seen terrified children or grandchildren standing rigid with fear when they approach.

Many dogs are charming and make good pets, but so do cats, and you can just leave them alone, Mr Marlowe.
