DOROTHY Nicholson stated in her letter ('City pools have taken a dive', March 3) that the Barbican pool was closed for repair work for three months due to a couple of roof bolts.

May I stress to Mrs Parkinson, vice chair of the Barbican Action Group, that these so called roof bolts were in fact 150mm x 150mm ceiling brackets that strengthen the main ceiling grid. If one of these brackets were to hit anyone they would most certainly be killed.

I was one of the skilled trades-persons, who, working for a local firm, repaired the ceiling.

The job went over its scheduled time as a ceiling inspection discovered it was in fact in a worse state than first anticipated, thus forcing the council to order special materials which cannot be subject to corrosion. They also cost an incredible lot more than first estimated.

Does she not think that, if able too, the council would have opened it earlier? At least Mrs Nicholson can now swim without anything falling on her head.

I suggest the Barbican Action Group becomes more informed on the Barbican goings on before they go writing silly letters to the Press.
