I JOINED many of my rail industry colleagues in York Minster, at the Memorial Service for victims of the Great Heck train crash. Prayers were said for the dead, bereaved, injured, emergency services and Heck residents.
Curiously there was no mention of the van driver, whose unplanned descent from the M62 precipitated the disaster. Whether he is ultimately found to be perpetrator or innocent victim, he has surely suffered enormous mental agony. Was he not equally deserving of public compassion and prayers?
