Your correspondent David Dunn (April 5) accuses anglers of causing bird deaths by "dumping used tackle". Sorry, David, anglers do not 'dump' tackle, particularly not at the price they have to pay for it. There is a case to be made for the loss of tackle when 'breaking off' while playing a large fish, or catching tackle on an obstruction in the water.

As for the increase in water birds being taken in to the Ryedale Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre, this is also subject to dispute, because most waters under our jurisdiction (including the Leeds Association's) were closed to angling from March 1 in an attempt to prevent the spread of foot and mouth.

Regarding the oil spill connection, we are aware of this and its location, as is the Environment Agency, which has conducted investigations into the source.
