Drax United beat York Police 4-2 in extra time in the York FA Sunday Afternoon Cup final at New Earswick yesterday, the tenth and last of this season's York FA cup finals.

Dave Hurst headed clear for Drax and Dave Ward of the Police missed from only two yards out. A goal-bound shot by Steve Todd was cleared off the Drax goalline, but Drax fought back and two shots by John Hurst brought Police goalkeeper Mick Gowan into action.

At the other end, Drax 'keeper Rober Cole made a fingertip save to deny Todd again.

Early in the second half referee David Innes reduced both sides to ten players following a melee.

The Police took the lead when a cross from the left was headed into the net by Rich Coultous. Drax responded strongly and the Police 'keeper produced an outstanding save to deny Damion Bowers but within a minute failed to collect the ball and allowed Rich Broadbent to equalise.

Broadbent gave Dan Rhodes a chance to score but he blasted wide. With a minute to go Broadbent scored after good play by Rhodes to put Drax 2-1 ahead.

But with a minute of injury time played a Drax defender gave away a penalty and Dave Hopper scored to take the final into extra time.

There were no goals in the first period of extra time but within a minute of the restart a through-ball fell to Bowers, who made no mistake. As the Police side tired, Rhodes tied up the game with the fourth goal for Drax.

The Evening Press Cup was presented to the winning captain by Ken Bainbridge of York FA.
