North Yorkshire's 'martial arts university', the first of its kind in the country, is now offering places for students seeking a career in the sport.

Based in Norton, the residential World Martial Arts Academy is now nearing completion after more than two years in the making and having seen its progress hampered by the Ryedale floods.

The centre, in Commercial Street, will combine training in all fighting and martial art disciplines with formal education that can lead to recognised vocational qualifications up to degree level.

"There will be many opportunities to study a wide range of subjects associated with the fighting or martial arts and all selected students will be placed on a variety of projects as part of their course," said martial arts expert Alan Foster, the brains behind the academy.

"But it must be stressed that the courses are not for those seeking an easy time. Those selected will be self-motivated, disciplined, physically and mentally prepared, non-smokers, ambitious and not afraid of hard work."

The Academy will provide opportunities for international travel and competition at every level, with the possibility of student exchanges.

Would-be students should preferably have some martial arts knowledge and experience and be prepared to reside at the academy and work locally to supplement the costs of their studies. The Academy will assist in obtaining work for those relocating to the area.

Those with existing grades and teaching qualifications within martial arts will be helped in the opening of their own schools and classes.

It is hoped that this will result in the establishment of 200 centres of excellence throughout the country. Places are limited.

The first stage of the project only has facilities for male students, but plans to provide additional accommodation for females in the future are being considered.
