The girl who plays the youngest of the Von Trapp children in York Theatre Royal's production of The Sound of Music met the woman who played the part 30 years ago almost to the day.

In 1971, the part of Gretl was played by Joanne Warburton for the York Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society.

She is the daughter of the society's former musical director and life member John Warburton.

Joanne met the latest incarnation of Gretl, Emily Sunman, prior to a special gala performance at the Theatre Royal hosted by Mr Warburton and Jim Welsman, chairman of the York Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society.

The Sound of Music runs at the Theatre Royal until Saturday.
