Heworth are to seek further talks with New Earswick All Blacks regarding plans to merge the two clubs.

Heworth's members discussed their concerns at a well-attended meeting at Elm Park Way and agreed that negotiations should continue.

Spokesman Ken Sykes said: "It was a positive meeting, although some people had concerns.

"There may be something in it but we will have to negotiate further.

"Once New Earswick have had their meeting with their members the two sub-committees will meet again in the near future and see if we can continue to find some kind of common ground."

However, talks might not reach the next stage if the clubs cannot compromise on a new name.

Heworth's members were adamant that they want the Heworth name, which has stood for 70 years, to continue.

They would consider becoming Heworth All Blacks but would not entertain a completely new name such as East York.

New Earswick have already made it clear they do not want to play under Heworth's name, so the clubs could find themselves at loggerheads.

New Earswick are holding an open meeting for members, players, parents of junior players and any other relevant parties tomorrow night at their White Rose Avenue home at 7.30pm.
