REGARDING the current debate about St Peter's School expansion plans, I believe independent schools make an important contribution to the diversity of education available in and around York, sitting alongside our own successful state schools.
I have no doubt that this quality and diversity of education provision makes a major contribution in encouraging businesses to move to the York area.
Independent schools such as St Peter's cannot afford to stand still. Their success depends on continuing to provide a wide range of educational facilities. The present plans are part of that continuing development.
If the school failed then the development of a block of apartments in The Avenue would be a minor matter compared to what could be built on the present school site.
