Dunnington's Maureen Thomas and Maureen Stakes of Harrogate came through the Yorkshire County Women's Bowling Association two-wood singles competition at York's Clarence Gardens to reach the final at Bert Keech on August 19.

Thomas had wins against J Marden (Wetherby) and M Marsay (Borough Park) while Stakes beat M Scoby-Smith (Sessay) and Joyce White (Swanland) in the later stages.

Both have also won an early qualification for the National Championships at Leamington Spa in August.

Although they only lost the aggregate points by two shots, a 6-2 defeat at Haxby Road is a major setback for Railway Amateurs.

They started the season with three resounding 8-0 victories and looked favourites to challenge the recent domination of Holgate and Haxby Road in the first division of the York Amateur Bowling Association League.

Burnholme, promoted from division two, have early victories against Dunnington and Hull Road Park and look a team set to establish itself in the top league.

Division two is already dominated by Stamford Bridge and Bootham, who were the teams relegated in 2000.

Rowntree Park greens remain out of use and York Council cannot give an estimate for opening. University are playing at Glen when possible and C&I Clubs are using Scarcroft.

Ideal Standard and Persimmon Homes sponsorship of YABA competitions has been confirmed for this year and secretaries are reminded the draw for individual competitions will take place at York Indoor on Tuesday, August 29.
