Fears were growing today that 600 jobs could still be at risk at Scarborough bus and coach firm Plaxtons despite a rescue plan designed to keep the plant open.

Workers had expected to be given details of the 14-point plan - including how many jobs would go - yesterday.

Previous speculation had been that 250 jobs could be saved, but today a source said the figure could be as low as 150.

The plant has a total workforce of 750, including 100 from York.

No one from Plaxtons was available for comment.

But a spokesman for the Transport and General Workers Union, which represents many of the plant's employees, said no official announcement had been made.

"The first, and main, objective was to make sure the plant stays open. That was achieved. We are now in talks about how many jobs will be saved, and while there may be notional figures floating about there is nothing to announce as yet," the spokesman said.
