Michael Vaughan celebrated his inclusion in England's one-day international squad by playing some sparkling shots after Yorkshire had been put in to bat by Northamptonshire in the Cricinfo Championship match at Headingley today.

Vaughan was unbeaten on 27 after 20 overs when Yorkshire were 43 for one, having lost Scott Richardson.

There was a shock for Yorkshire when Darren Lehmann was forced to drop out of the game at the last minute because of a pinched nerve in his neck. His place was taken by Craig White, who dashed from Scarborough where he was playing in Yorkshire's Second XI against Worcestershire Seconds.

White yesterday returned to form with an unbeaten 82 but Yorkshire can still only play him as a batsman until he is fully recovered from his back injury.

Lehmann hurt his neck while batting for Yorkshire in their Benson and Hedges Cup quarter-final win against Somerset at Taunton on Wednesday.

"I cannot turn my head very easily at the moment and need some more treatment but I am confident of being fit again by next week," said the Australian.

Northamptonshire also made a surprise late change with off-spinner Graeme Swann being pulled out of the second team match against Essex at Saffron Walden to replace Lesroy Weekes who was bitterly disappointed not to be making his Championship debut as confidently expected.

Weekes had a close association with Yorkshire from 1994 until the end of last season when the cricket committee recommended putting him on a full contract but this was rejected by the general committee and Weekes was snapped up by Northants.

On an overcast and much cooler morning, Northants won the toss and inserted Yorkshire who were given a sound start by Richardson and Vaughan.

While England were announcing that Vaughan had been included in their one-day squad for the forthcoming international series, the batsman showed his class by striking Darren Cousins elegantly through the covers for the first four of the match.

Vaughan continued to prosper before before Northants made their first change with Tony Penberthy replacing Cousins. He got the breakthrough as Richardson holed out to Swann.
