SOME of the country's top cyclists will go through the gears in North Yorkshire next month.

Doncaster's John Tanner, the British champion and premier points leader, will be among 70 riders trying to win the Peter Longbottom Memorial Trophy on June 3 at Sheriff Hutton.

Last year's winner Mark Lovatt, of Leek, will defend the title.

The trophy race, in memory of the former Olympic and Commonwealth Games cyclist from Malton, who died three years ago, is part of Yorkshire Regional Road Race Cycling Championships.

The event starts at 10am from Sheriff Hutton and the 85-mile circuit incorporates the Bulmer Bank climb.

The event is organised by the Velo Club York, Longbottom's former club.

Among the leading York riders hoping to make an impact will be Ian Holmes, Chris Clarke and Jamie Sharpe, all of the host club, and Clifton CC pair Rob Osman and Jamie Sharpe.
