A WEDDING reception exploded into violence - with both bridegroom and bride involved in the trouble, York magistrates heard.

Police had to be called to quell the disturbance at the Brewer's Arms, in Tanner Row, which began with newlywed Wayne Bamber, his brother, Stewart, and another man fighting.

Then bride Charlotte Bamber had an altercation with Stewart Bamber's wife, Michelle.

David Garnett, prosecuting, said initially the women present had tried to calm the situation down.

"There was an amount of drink, it would appear, as well as a disco," he said.

The arrival of the police rapidly calmed the situation and the newlyweds, with several of their guests aged 17 to 32, later appeared in court.

One guest, Lord Alfred Wharton, aged 24, of Nunthorpe Road, York, was ordered to pay £100 compensation to the landlord.

At an earlier hearing, the bride and groom's solicitor, John Howard, told the bench no-one knew how the fight started, and they had not spent their nuptial night as close together as they had hoped.

The 30-year-old bridegroom, of Sterne Avenue, Tang Hall, and Wharton, both admitted affray and were fined £200 and banned from the pub for six months.

Stewart Bamber, aged 32, of Crabtree Grove, New Earswick, admitted criminal damage and a public order offence, and was fined £300 and banned for three months.

Michelle Bamber, aged 27, of Crabtree Grove, New Earswick and a 17-year-old girl from east York were bound over. The 26-year-old bride, of Sterne Avenue, Tang Hall, is also expected to be bound over, but was not in court at the time. All three have denied affray.

Alexandra Claire Allan, aged 26, of Crombie Avenue, Clifton, admitted a public order offence. She was fined £100 and banned from the pub for three months.

Her solicitor, Damien Morrison, said she did not start the fight in which she was involved.

Sarah Gallogly, aged 26, of Horner Street, Burton Stone Lane, was fined £50 for using inappropriate language towards police officers.

Solicitors Sandra Keen and Mark Thompson also represented wedding guests.
