I WAS delighted to see that Bill Roache, Ken Barlow of Coronation Street, has recently been awarded an honour. If anyone deserves it for bringing his own brand of decency and neighbourliness over so many years to the nation's favourite soap, Bill does.

I had the great pleasure of meeting Bill some years ago when my kind husband, not being a Street fan himself, treated me to a Coronation Street weekend at the Granada Studios in Manchester.

This softly-spoken, self-effacing and charming man put us all at our ease and took time and trouble to make sure he spent some minutes with every person present - no mean task - but he was as pleasant and interested in the last person as with the first.

Well done Bill, may the Street be honoured with your presence for many years to come.
