Fifteen New Earswick swimmers had a successful weekend at the Scarborough A/B Graded Meet, collecting 15 first, 11 second and four third place trophies, plus 12 medals for fourth to sixth place and five speeding certificates.

Thirteen-year-old James Richards swam exceptionally well, sharing the Overall Top Boy award which he achieved by collecting four first place trophies in the A grade 100m backstroke, breaststroke, freestyle and individual medley plus second place in the 100m butterfly, all in new personal best times.

Other A grade successes came from ten-year-old Jennifer Welsh with first place in the 50m breaststroke, a freestyle second place, fourth and sixth place medal, plus a second place trophy in the B grade backstroke.

Tony Shaw, in the over 15-years age group, finished with second in the individual medley, thirds in the back and breaststroke and a fifth and sixth place medal.

In the B grade, Marcus Patterson in the ten-years category collected three speeding certificates in the 50 metres backstroke, butterfly and freestyle and a fourth place medal in the breaststroke race.

Speeding certificates also went to Emily Broadbent in the 12-years 100m breaststroke and Nicola Howlett in the 14-years 100m butterfly.

Emily also collected first, second and third place trophies in the 100 metres backstroke, freestyle and butterfly plus a fifth place medal, while Nicola picked up first in the 100m freestyle and a fifth place medal in the A graded backstroke.

Eleven-year-old Jenna Howlett, in the 11-year-old competition, came second in the 50m backstroke and fifth in the individual medley.

Ellen Clark (14) also had a good gala with first place in the 100m butterfly and backstroke and second place in the freestyle, breaststroke and individual medley.

Another swimmer taking a trophy in all his events was Jason Miller (15) who collected a backstroke first, breaststroke third and second place in both the butterfly and individual medley, finishing with a fourth place in the freestyle event.

Lucy Gould, also 15, touched first in the B grade 100 metres freestyle plus a fifth and sixth place medal to add to her fifth place in the A grade backstroke.

In the over 15-years age group Heather Welsh finished with a second place in the breaststroke and two fifth place medals.

Personal best times were swum by Daniel Richards, Kim Shaw and Katie Walters in their first competitive outings, bringing the total set by the group to 54.

The biggest improvements on personal best times came from Stephanie Gould with a ten second personal best, Jason Milner with two eight seconds, Ellen Clark with two seven seconds and Lucy Gould with one eight second personal best time.
