ALAN Smith was right to point out the dangers and disruption to the southern arterial road that the proposed junction to the A19 for the Germany Beck development might cause (July 3).

I recently inspected the planning application for this development. There was no traffic-flow study or any analysis of environmental impact of the extra traffic on the existing users of the Fulford Road.

The planning application had some other details wrong. It claimed that the proposed road did not cross the site of the Battle of Fulford even though it would pass within a few metres of the plaque commemorating this neglected battle of 1066.

The site also appears to be badly sited just after a fast bend. There is no study of the safety aspect in the planning application.

Is it cynical to anticipate that the city will have to pay the costs of a major road improvement to increase the capacity of this junction after the developers have built their road over this irreplaceable battle field site?

I hope Mr Smith's concerns about city planners ignoring the public's fears are not justified but I agree that it is wise that we "voice our concern" as he suggests.
