I WENT for my bi-annual eye-test to the Clifton Moor optical branch of a nation-wide chain of chemists shops.
The test indicated a change of lenses was necessary. I asked to have my expensive and perfectly serviceable frames re-glazed with the new lenses.
I was told that an obscure European Union regulation now forbids the re-glazing of old frames unless the said frames are stamped with the 'CE' logo.
Thus, if I want my new specs, I will have to pay almost double the original cost of the bi-focal lenses in order to get new frames as well (which no doubt will have the magic logo on them) .
It is no wonder that such a strong ground-swell of anti-EU feeling exists in the country when incomprehensible regulations like the fore-going are coming thick and fast from Brussels.
