MEMBERS of a York Scout group were in a state of shock today after an arson attack destroyed their hut and thousands of pounds worth of equipment.

St Chad's Greys Scout Group's base, in Lorne Street, South Bank, was completely gutted by fire after it was deliberately set alight last night.

It is believed the fire was started after someone climbed into the building through a window. Youths were spotted running away.

Members of the group living nearby rushed to the scene to watch helplessly as firefighters fought in vain to save the building.

The group caters for about 90 Scouts - Beaver Scouts, aged as young as six, through to Venture Scouts, aged just over 20.

Assistant Scout Leader Peter Edwards, who arrived at the scene shortly after the fire was spotted, said: "They are all very upset. Quite a few of the Scouts were down there last night and there were an awful lot of tears. This is extremely bad news for us."

He said the hut, which has been home to the Scout group for about 50 years, had contained £10,000 worth of musical instruments used by the band, and thousands of pounds worth of camping, outdoor and games equipment.

The group had also been due to celebrate its 75th anniversary this year.

Mr Edwards said the building had suffered a spate of vandal attacks in recent months, including windows being broken.

Last year, the kitchen area of the building had to be replaced after it was badly damaged by a fire which was started deliberately.

Mr Edwards said: "I just don't understand why they would do it. I can't see what possible satisfaction they could get from doing this. It's so annoying."

He warned people to stay away from the building which is unsafe following the fire, which happened at about 8.30pm.

Firefighters confirmed the cause was malicious.
