Polar Kingdom, whose defeat at York last month cost backers a king's ransom, returns to action tomorrow in a bid to recover losses on the opening day of the star-studded July meeting at Newmarket.

Jeremy Noseda's sprinter goes for the Jane of Newmarket Rated Handicap and, with Pat Eddery in the saddle, is fancied to clinch the honours.

Kevin Darley was on board when Polar Kingdom appeared on Knavesmire in the William Hill Trophy, in which he was heavily backed down to favouritism.

Punters, though, had to settle for third place as Polar Kingdom, after not getting the best of runs, was beaten just over four lengths into third place by Orientor and Armagnac, who were split by a whisker.

Well worth another chance, the highly-regarded Polar Kingdom can get back on top tomorrow.

Frankie Dettori looks set for a good day on his local course.

The charismatic jockey can land the £50,000 Cherry Hinton Stakes on Silent Honor, trained by David Loder, whose two-year-olds have been virtually unbeatable this season.

Silent Honor had an easy four lengths to spare when making a winning debut last month and left the impression that she is a high-class filly in the making. She gets the chance to prove it here.

Dettori and Loder can also take the opening Strutt & Parker Maiden Stakes with Dubai Destination.

A $1.5m yearling purchase, Dubai Destination failed by a short head to beat Waldenburg at Newbury on his debut, but the pair finished five lengths clear of their rivals. Clearly an exciting prospect, Dubai Destination can open his winning account this time.

The £60,000 Princess of Wales's Pearls and Coutts Stakes has attracted a cracking field, including Sandmason, fresh from his Royal Ascot triumph.

Henry Cecil's colt won the Hardwicke Stakes in determined fashion to gain his first success of the season. He faces stiff opposition tomorrow among his eight rivals, but I expect Richard Quinn's mount to prevail again.

Tomorrow's mile-and-a-half event will see a rematch of the Hardwicke Stakes, in which Sandmason beat the Mark Johnston-trained Zindabad in a thrilling finish.

Zindabad is 3lb better off with the Warren Place runner tomorrow and Johnston is hopeful of a bold show - as long as there is no significant softening of the ground.

"He's very, very well," said the Middleham man today. "I just hope there's not too much give in the ground - that would be my only concern. Provided the ground is good or faster, he'll go extremely well."

Racing in Yorkshire tomorrow is at Pontefract, where the first two-year-old handicap of the season takes place in the shape of the Dianne Nursery.

Preference here is for Tucker Fence, a progressive performer trained by Alan Berry, and a winner at Newcastle last time out. He is napped to follow-up in this six-furlongs dash.

Amateur rider Serena Brotherton gained back-to-back wins on successive days at Redcar and Ripon recently and the Ryedale solicitor could well add to her score in the Hyde Sporting Ladies Handicap

Brotherton partners the Mick Easterby-trained Lago, a decent second at Hamilton last week to Opportune, who has won again since.
