DR Campbell states that motorists should have an eye test regularly. I would point out that most do and all motorists are well aware of the requirement of holding a driving licence.
The sight of the average motorist must be fairly good as most of us are able to spot unlit cyclists wearing dark clothes at night.
With regard to his remarks about driving mirrors, some motorists do not make full use of them but is it not rather odd that bicycles, which are the slowest vehicles on the road, and therefore the most overtaken, do not have any mirrors at all, while most cars have three?
Also, when I buy a car it is fully equipped with lights, reflectors and so forth, but a bike is usually not.
Finally, Dr Campbell accuses us of driving in the gutter; sometimes we have no alternative, as some of the roads in York are very narrow and we have no desire to collide with something coming the other way!
