FORMER York Wasps and Hull Kingston Rovers star Garry Atkins is joining forces with his brother Paul to form a new coaching team at New Earswick All Blacks.

The Atkins brothers take over from Mick McTigue, who has left the club by mutual agreement after five years as player-coach.

They were both junior players with the All Blacks and spokesman Charles Rollinson said Harrogate-based Garry, who had a spell as York Wasps' caretaker coach last season, was keen to return.

"Garry has always shown an interest in coaching the All Blacks. He was in the running when Mick McTigue got it and it's just fallen into place with Mick parting company.

"Mick has been a superb asset to the club and the All Blacks wish him well for the future. I'm sure he's got plenty more to offer the game."

Paul, who has also played for the Wasps, has recent coaching experience with the York Acorn Ladies team.

The Atkins' first task will be to take charge of the opening pre-season training session tomorrow night as they prepare the side for their first shot at Yorkshire League glory.

It has been confirmed the All Blacks will be competing in the Yorkshire League's senior division next season following their withdrawal from the National Conference League.

Spokesman Charles Rollinson said: "We are aiming high. If we can hang onto most of our first team squad we will be looking to finish in the top two.

"It's a matter of rebuilding. It is still in our plans to rejoin the Conference in three to five years."

New and old players are welcome at tomorrow's training session which takes place at New Earswick's White Rose Avenue home, starting at 7pm.

The club's presentation night takes place on Saturday, July 21 at their clubhouse.
