York won the Acomb Invitation Trophy after overtaking Heworth's total of 156 for 6 with six wickets and seven balls to spare last night.

Graham Hayward and Dave Simpson gave Heworth a cracking start before they were separated in the fourth over with the score on 49.

Hayward fell to a brilliant diving catch at mid-off by Dave Caplow off Nash Stone, who was man-of-the-match with a bowling return of 4 for 19 off four overs and later scoring 47 before was stumped by Dapson off Martin Bell.

Guy Wilkinson, batting at No 4, was Heworth's top scorer with 57 not out and helped his side reach a creditable 156 for 6.

York, who, subject to confirmation, may have set a record for the competition, with their 227 for 2 off 16 eight ball overs against Dringhouses in the semi-final, made a cautious replay against Heworth.

But by the sixth over they had reached 70 for 0 as Marcus Wood and Stone got to work.

Australian Stone was stumped off Bell with the score at 76.

Michael Mortimer was bowled by Bell and from being 70 without loss York dipped to 76 for 3 in the space of an over before Nick Kay helped to stabilise York's innings as they then went on to produce a well-controlled finish.
