RESIDENTS of a York suburb say they have had enough after roadworks began near their homes for the third time this year.

People living in the Heworth Green area endured delays and noise while the new roundabout at the Malton road junction was built, and again last month when Transco installed new gas pipes.

The gas pipe work was recently completed three weeks ahead of schedule, but residents had asked why it was not done when the roundabout was being built.

Transco said the work was not needed at that time.

Residents now fear more disruption after workmen returned to the area yesterday.

An Evening Press reader, who asked to remain anonymous, said: "After the work was finished everybody disappeared.

"Occasionally someone from Transco wandered up, until yesterday work started again.

"They have blocked off the inside lane on Heworth Green and are also working on Malton Road again.

"It is just too much. We thought the work was finished, but now they are back. People living here are starting to wonder just when this is going to end."

Heworth councillor Cyril Waite, who lives near the roundabout, said: "It hasn't been too bad here in my opinion, considering the work Transco have had to do.

"People are looking forward to things being back to normal. Having said that, it will probably get dug up again by somebody else in a few weeks' time."

A Transco spokeswoman confirmed the company was at Heworth Green, but said it would be gone soon.

"All we are doing is making sure the roundabout and surrounding area are in the well-maintained state they were when we started the work.

"We will be finished by the end of this week."
