Stillingfleet are third in division three but what a fight struggling Askham Bryan - led by 16-year-old Nadeem Sadiq - put up before losing by just seven runs.
A free scoring 67 from Rob Murray and rapid 91 from Dave Rowsby graced the 'Fleet knock of 251 for 7. Colin Garnett took 3 for 57.
With the score at 48 for 1 Sadiq opened up in tandem with Mark Grewer. They put on 147 for the second wicket with teenager Sadiq notching his maiden ton and Grewer 49. However, it was not enough in an absorbing game.
Hirst and Melbourne may not be among the top runners of the division, but they produced a fine duel. Melbourne's Martin Reynolds could well be kicking himself. First he took four wickets in four balls, then he hit a very cultured 64. Yet he still finished on the losing side as Hirst won by 29 runs.
Kevin Ryder turned proceedings the way of leaders Copmanthorpe against Melbourne.
After being well-placed at 119 for 4 Ryder routed the innings with 5 for 19, including a hat-trick, as the final six wickets tumbled for just eight runs.
