IT is hard to decide whether to feel shocked or smug. Home Office figures reveal prosecutions for drunkenness have increased by a fifth in ten years. Yet ministers are keen to blame that rise on tourists.
That is a wonderful get-out clause. In every pub in York, sober locals will now complain about the visitors: "They come here, drinking our beer, causing havoc..."
In the rarefied air of the moral high ground, we can drink to our superior moral standards. But only in moderation, naturally.
