SPORTS stars of the future will be on parade at Huntington Stadium, York, on Sunday.

Nestl Rowntree Athletics Club are hosting a National Junior League fixture in which some of the region's leading athletes aged between 15 and 19 will be in action.

Rowntrees will face stiff opposition from City of Edinburgh AC, Petrivie AC, Gateshead Harriers, Middlesborough and District, Houghton and Peterlee, Mandale Harriers and North Shields Polytechnic.

Rowntrees hope to have their four leading youngsters - Adam Lee, David McQuarrie, Natalie Cooper and Sam Wood available.

York College student Lee, 17, a 50 metre javelin thrower, represented North Yorkshire at the English Schools Athletics Championships in Exeter earlier this month.

Sherburn High School pupil McQuarrie, the first boy from the York area to win selection for the England Schools Cross-Country team, returns to Huntington stadium where he recently set a York Schools record of 4 minutes 30.3secs for the 1,500m.

Wood, of Easingwold School, is a multi-events star who has figured in the English Schools Championships and is expected to appear in several events on Sunday.

Long jumper Cooper, who attends Queen Margaret's School, Escrick, is another with experience at English Schools Championship level.

The action at Huntington Stadium starts at 11.30am and is expected to go on for about six hours. Admission is free.

McQuarrie was one of the star performers as Rowntree had their best result of the season in the last of five matches of the McDonalds League at the Herringthorpe Stadium, Rotherham.

Man of the match awards were also claimed in their respective age groups by Jonathan Saville, who clocked 12.2 secs in the Under 15 100m and Russell Bowers, who threw 8.99m in the Under 13 shot putt.

The strong showing by the York boys should see them stay up in the Northern One East Division next year.
