RED-FACED roads bosses have admitted misspelling a road sign for a Ryedale village.
Instead of spelling Sheriff Hutton the correct way, Highways Agency officials erected a sign on the A64 at Flaxton Lane End pointing to "Sherriff Hutton".
Exasperated villagers claim it is not the first time - last year North Yorkshire County Council put up a misspelled sign on the outskirts of the village, said parish clerk Alan Farnaby.
"Oh dear, oh dear," he said when the Evening Press told him of the Highways Agency's blunder.
"It's unbelievable that they can spend this much money and still get it wrong - I bet it's going to cost them money to fix it.
"This happened last year with the county council and it seems they just keep getting it wrong. Perhaps they should look it up next time."
A Highways Agency spokesman said: "We would like to apologise and reply by righting this wrong, reducing the 'r's to the right ratio and putting the sign on the road to recovery."
