A North Yorkshire man accused of murdering a neighbour has been remanded in custody until next Monday.

Thomas Edward Richardson, 43, of Primrose Grove, Selby, appeared before the town's magistrates yesterday charged with the murder of Andrew Campbell.

Magistrates refused his application for bail and transferred the case to York Crown Court where he will appear on Monday.

Richardson, who is married with a daughter, was said to be a medical officer at Gascoigne Wood Mine in the Selby pit complex.

Dressed in a dark suit, white shirt and tie, Richardson spoke only to confirm his name and address and that he understood the charge.

He was represented by solicitor David Crossling who used to work in Selby, but is now based in Wakefield.

Magistrates agreed to extend Richardson's legal aid to the crown court.

Mr Campbell, 40, died from a single stab wound at about 9.30 on Sunday evening outside a house in Primrose Grove.

The father-of-two, who also has two stepchildren, lived in Hempbridge Road, Selby, with his wife, Debbie, who works in the bakery at Somerfields supermarket.

Mr Campbell worked as a mechanic and was a part-time firefighter based at Selby fire station.

Flowers with messages of condolence have been left outside his semi-detached home by family and friends.
