WITH a set of steamy photographs, Coronation Street bosses tee up the viewers for their latest plot twist. Maxine is to fall for the bedside manner of dashing Dr Matt.
Sex in soaps is nothing new. But these days adultery is not always enough. Hardly half an hour goes by without a lesbian kiss, and even incest is no longer taboo. Serial rivalry will increase as EastEnders goes four nights a week. If only the producers would rediscover that former staple of soaps: humour.
An Albert Square or Coronation Street resident cracks a smile - now that would be a truly shocking storyline.
