NO BUSES will run between York and this year's Great Yorkshire Air Show, the Evening Press has learned.

The city's main bus operator, First York, ran services to the Evening Press sponsored event - held on Elvington Airfield - last year.

But this year there will be no such "specials", and because the event is on Bank Holiday Sunday and Monday when there is no York to Elvington bus anyway, there will be no scheduled services either.

No other local bus operator has registered to run the service.

First York commercial manager, John Fletcher, said the decision was down to a lack of customers.

He said: "We lost loads of money last year because not enough people used the service. We can't afford to run it at a loss. Many people from York can get there by car, there is plenty of parking and so the call for buses is low."

The decision was described as "a real shame" by a non-driving air show fan, from Huntington.

The woman, who didn't want to be named, said: "Not everyone has cars so how are we supposed to get there?. I'll have to get a taxi now which will cost me £18, even if I only go on one day.

"You'd think they could at least put one return service on each day."

Air Show spokesman Chris Hudson said: "We had this problem last year.

"One of the operators did put buses on, but I think they were quite badly under-subscribed. As far as I am aware no operator has decided to run any services this year and I appreciate it could be difficult for people. However, of the hundreds of people who have rung for tickets in advance only three have asked about buses.

lAttractions at the event are set to include the Red Arrows, the Royal Navy Historic Flight, the Battle of Britian Memorial Flight, RAF Falcon sky divers, two Sea King helicopters, and an aerobatic team.
