DESPITE a lacklustre performance against an understrength Selby team, York under-14s posted a 24-17 victory over their close neighbours.
Selby raced into a 12-0 after the first quarter as they capitalised on some poor handling from York.
But the home side pulled themselves together and came back well to score tries through No 8 Oliver Bevis and lock Joel Lancaster.
And by half-time, York had taken an unexpected 17-12 lead when Bevis peeled off a rolling maul to score. Simon White converted.
The second half saw an improvement in York's play, with Jonathan Williamson crossing for a try, converted by White. Selby reduced the arrears with a breakaway try, but strong tackling from Chris Woolley and Tom Bewick ensured the win.
Players who want to join York's junior section should contact Jane Sleeman on 01347-838448 for further details. Under-13 players, in particular, are required.
