SCORES of children packed into York Light Opera Society auditions in the hopes of starring in Scrooge The Musical - the company's latest ghostly production.

Filled with festive spirit, about 170 youngsters waited their turn at St Clement's Church Hall, in Moss Street, York, yesterday before giving their all in front of the director.

Two teams of 20 children were picked from the groups to perform on alternate nights, and from them it is hoped that Tiny Tim and other members of the Cratchit family will be chosen.

The show will run at the Theatre Royal between February 12 and 23.

Tony Reeves, publicity manager and vice-chairman of York Light Opera, said: "I think Scrooge is a story that everyone knows, because it is based on A Christmas Carol.

"It's going to be very magical because there's lots of flying for the ghosts and special effects with ghosts walking through walls and doors.

"We are hoping that it will be very much a family affair, especially with having so many children in it, which tends to attract the families."

An adult audition took place on Saturday and all parts should be cast by the end of this week.
