Goliath was in no mood to let David make progress in the Intermediate Cup as Bridlington dominated to beat Malton and Norton 44-14.

The lightweight Malton pack were no match for a vastly more experienced eight who showed why they currently operate three divisions above Malton.

Devoid of any worthwhile first phase possession it was always going to be hard for Malton to get into the game.

The hosts kept things simple with fly-half Robinson kicking well for position before releasing those outside to pound the Malton line.

The first score came after ten minutes when an overlap was created on the right for Richard Medforth to score Brid's first try which David Robinson converted.

Malton were not playing badly but the extra strength and nous of the home side meant that far too much ball was turned over in rucks and mauls. Brid extended the lead with a forward try by Jonathon Todd, again converted by Robinson.

For a brief spell Malton took control to the extent that a loose pass was intercepted by Ian Cooke, who raced 50 yards to score under the posts and convert himself.

Living off scraps of possession the Malton backs were showing glimpses of what they could do. However, Brid's power was too much and a Lenny Richardson try and penalty gave them a 22-7 interval lead.

With Tom Eddy suffering from concussion Malt were forced to shuffle the pack.

But little altered with Brid maintaining the upper hand as two further tries were added through Richardson.

Malton were trying to run at every opportunity, a highly commendable tactic, but against Bridlington's class a clearing boot may have been more appropriate.

Malton narrowed the gap with a good threequarter movement which gave Tim Chapman his first try of the season. Cooke again converted.

But the final nail in the Malton coffin resulted from yet another forward drive from a lineout which ended in a try wide out for Richardson, his fourth of the game.

The gap between the two sides was evident throughout but the young Malton ranks will have learned much from the game.

They were never embarrassed and stuck to the task for the full 80 minutes. If they can learn to be more ruthless, within the laws, there is no reason why the rise cannot continue.

Certainly in patches they showed that the capability is there to live with sides from higher leagues.
