The second round of the Yorkshire Winter League saw 70 anglers enjoying the Indian summer on the improving River Calder around Mirfield.

There were a few surprises in the team contest, Wibsey Angling taking the day and with it a share of the lead after two rounds.

Pre-match hot favourites Hirst Tackle 'A' team crashed to fifth place on the day and also suffered the humiliation of a next peg battering in their own back yard from Anglers World.

The York/Tadcaster consortium now share the lead with Wibsey, and with the last three fixtures on their 'home' waters will now be fancying their chances.

Craig Turbitt (Wibsey Angling) led his side to victory with a winning 9lb from a peg at the Pear Tree Inn. Alternating caster under both waggler and stick lines he too some quality roach plus dace and chublets.

Ian Bates (Hirst Tackle 'B') was above the Ship Inn weir, where he tackled the steady water with a waggler and maggot attack down the middle. He included roach, dace and gudgeon in his 8lb 13oz return.

Steve Raper (Hirst Tackle A) secured third place from below Calder Road Bridge where he used waggler and caster for an all roach 7lb 11oz.

Others: Jim Jordan (Armley Angling) 7-9-0; Tim Harrison (Anglers World) 6-13-8; Dave Pollitt (Hirst Tackle A) 6-11-8.

Teams: Wibsey Angling 49; Anglers World 48; Hirst Tackle 'B' 47; Armley Angling 46; Hirst Tackle 'A' 45.

League: Anglers World and Wibsey Angling both 4; Hirst Tackle 'A' 6.

With many anglers occupied on the Calder, only 25 diehards braved the Ouse below York for York Amalgamation's Tower Trophy match.

The match failed to live up to it's billing, the bream expected not showing up.

In the end it was a photo-finish, with the scales unable to separate the top two.

Al Martindale (Tang Hall Match Group) and Graham Austin (Selby) both scaled 5lb 3oz.

Martindale fished from a peg between the Donkeywoods sand and the road bridge. Austin was two pegs above the crematorium.

Both anglers fished groundbait feeders with maggot hookbaits and included a couple of skimmers in their roach and perch nets.

Others: Dean Smith (Van den Eynde Goole) 5-2-0, Ken Jones (Tang Hall Match Group) and Col Plant (Acomb) both 4-10-0.

Trans-Pennine travelling partners paralysed the opposition in another great match on Maple Lake at the Oaks.

The lowest weight in the 51 field was 14lb, with 25lb needed to win every section.

Kev Hill (Sensas Garbolino) led from hot peg 62a with 69lb 3oz. Fishing into the corner he alternated corn and maggot at 13 metres for a string of small carp to 3lb.

Mark Vanderkamp (Sensas Garbolino) continued the rout with 62lb 12oz from peg 45. Fishing pole and maggot up the ledge at 12 metres he was kept busy with a string of small pasty carp from 8 to 12 oz.

Others: John Allerton (Tricast Whizzo) 38-6-0, Mick Herrington (Headingley Angling) 37-12-0, Mel Sykes (The Oaks) 34-8-0, Gary Pawlett (The Oaks) 33-12-0.
