THE body of a man pulled from the River Derwent last week has been identified as Malton pensioner Kenneth Perrin.

The 71-year-old had been missing for more than a week when his body was found last Thursday in the River Derwent between Eden Camp and Old Malton.

Police divers were called to search the river after Mr Perrin was reported missing.

A search was called after his blue Nissan Micra was found at Howe Bridge on the A169 Malton to Pickering road on Saturday September 29.

The car was unlocked and the keys had been left in the ignition Mr Perrin had last been seen a week ago by a relative.

The discovery sparked a full-scale police search of the river, its banks and the surrounding countryside by police, tracker dogs and the Scarborough and District Search and Rescue Team.

At the time of Mr Perrin's disappearance the River Rye, which runs under Howe Bridge, had been severely swollen by heavy rain.

The pensioner's sister-in-law Doreen Perrin made an appeal in the Evening Press for information about Mr Perrin's disappearance.

She said the family had been particularly concerned because he suffered from emphysema and often became short of breath.

A police spokesman said a post-mortem was due to be carried out on the body which was found on Thursday, though there were no suspicious circumstances.
