NICOLA Lampard has become Northern schools' biathlon championship on only her second attempt at the sport.

The 14-year-old Tadcaster Grammar School pupil finished ten points ahead of the runner-up in the Year 9 girls' category at Clay Cross, Derby-shire. Nicola, left, who is from Copman-thorpe, came seventh in the 50m swim and then won the 800m run in very heavy conditions. She won a medal for her victory in the run and a trophy for becoming Northern champion.

Earlier this month she finished second overall in her first biathlon, at Askam Leisure Centre, Doncaster.

Nicola, who does her athletics training with the Nestle Rowntree club and swims with York City Baths Club, now goes forward to the national schools' finals at Rugby in February.
