EVERY shopkeeper wants to catch the eye of potential customers, but the glare from Shoe Carnival's signs was more likely to have people reaching for their sunglasses.
The new-look fascia, complete with circus colours and dancing clown motif, would have seemed over-the-top on Scarborough sea front. It certainly had no place on an ancient York street.
Planners were right to stamp down on Shoe Carnival's antics. To do nothing would have permitted tasteless shop designers to paint the town red.
And yellow, and green...
