THE pedestrian killed on York's outer ring road has been named as Zeke Hindmarsh.

The 19-year-old Philosophy, Politics and Economics student from York University was hit by a Land Rover Discovery at 3am yesterday, while walking in the middle of the road.

The Land Rover was being driven by Michael McGregor, 35, of Eastholme Drove, York, who was himself hit by a car when he got out to help, and suffered head injuries.

The student, from Rotherham, South Yorkshire, was with another man at the time of the incident which led to the closure of the road for nearly six hours.

Zeke Hindmarsh's supervisor, Dr Matt Matravers, said: "He hadn't been here very long, but he was clearly someone of great charm and energy and had the greater part of his life ahead of him. It is a tragedy that that life should be cut short in such a terrible manner."

Acting Inspector Dave Sutcliffe of York Police said: "When people are walking around late at night they should take extreme care."

Anyone who witnessed the accident should contact York Police on 01904 631321.
