YORK RI 'A' crashed to a 6-4 defeat against Sheffield 'A' in the Woodhouse Cup.

York fielded a weaker team than

their previous matches against much poorer opposition.

A full strength York team would probably have won but many of the stronger players did not travel to Sheffield and despite the best efforts of those who did York were always up against it.

There were York wins for debutant Almas Ermekov and Jon Griffith and draws from Paul Townsend, Paul Hopwood, Jim Shemilt and Peter Cloudsdale.

The beaten players were David Adams, Tony Slinger, Steve Huxley and Richard Mounce.

York RI 'B' fared a little better at Leeds in the IM Brown.

York's top three boards all lost but the bottom four won and Matthew Palmer, making his debut, drew on board four.

The match was decided on the last game to finish when Paul Anderson impressively won an opposite coloured bishop ending to give York a 4-3 win.

This followed earlier wins by Tom Anderson, Laurence Cornhill and Steve Webster.

York RI 'C' lost by 5-2 points to Dewsbury who proved to have too much strength in depth.

York's only win came from captain Neville Pearce and there were draws from Richard Hardy, Ewen Cameron and Rodney Mitchinson.

York RI 'D' put up a brave fight against Alwoodley before losing 5-2.

York had one win by Bill Fulton and draws from their top three boards, Herbert Lockwood, Graham Marshall and Fahad Yousif.

In the York Evening League, divison one Cavaliers beat Whippersnappers 6-0 thanks to victories from Paul Hopwood, Jim Shemilt, Steve Huxley, Richard Hardy, Owen Robson and Paul Brooks.

The match between Cavaliers 'B' and Kings was played over five boards instead of the usual six and ended in a 4-1 triumph Cavaliers 'B'. There were wins

from David Findlay, Sri Sriharan and Kevin Holiday and draws between Paul Johnson and John Bennett and Alan Price and Rachel Mothersill.

Danger Squares beat Conquerers 4-2 in division two. Their victors were Paul Brooks, Arron Barker, Kevin Holiday and Sidney Kirby. Conquerers' wins came from Richard Hardy and Owen Robson.

Shepherds Two beat Lady Anne

Middleton Two by 3-2 with Bob Maltby and David Latimer winning. Shepherds also gained a point by default and a draw between Stuart Acton and M Salim. Neville Pearce and Colin Snowball won for Lady Anne Middleton.
