YORK and District Indoor Bowls Club began their campaign in the prestigious national Denny Cup competition in excellent form with an 84-56 victory over Ryedale capped by all four rinks winning.

At home, Iain Boyle's rink, including Mick Bruce, Mal Turpin and John Walker, found themselves 9-2 down after seven ends before they won nine of the next ten en-route to a 22-14 win.

The other home rink of Paul Mooring, John Emmerson, Graham Brooke and Russ Barton were 8-1 ahead against Mark Walton's team after only four ends before the visitors made inroads to be only one behind. The game remained close up to the last end when the home team scored a two to win 18-14.

At Ryedale, David Stroughair, Stuart Bryan, Barry Walker and Dudley Williams comfortably won 11 of 21 ends.

In the other rink, Mal Harrison, Dave Hewick, Phil Parsons and Frank Turner had a great start scoring two fours on the first two ends setting themselves up for a 19-15 win. York now face Hull in the third round on November 10.

York also started their Egham Trophy campaign, a national competition which saw them win in 2000 and finish as beaten finalists this year.

They overwhelmed preliminary round opponents Ryedale 89-48, again with all four rinks winning.

Pick of the games was David Stroughair's rink of Stuart Bryan, Joyce Chelin and Joan Jackson. Playing at Norton, they lost the first two ends before scoring a 4, 5, 3 and a four to open up a 16-2 lead after only six ends.

They continued to win the next four ends to extend their lead to 22-2 before eventually winning 31-13 to demoralise the Ryedale team, who, both home and away, were aware of the trouble their team-mates were in.

Mark Walton's team, playing at York, were one of those who became disenchanted with the game and conceded after losing eight shots on three successive ends after the 17th against Paul Mooring, Graham Brooke, Carol Instone and Dot Kennelly. The final score was 19-9.

The other York rink playing at Ryedale included Mal Harrison, Dave Hewick, Melanie Brooke and Michelle Mooring.

They had a comfortable game after leading 8-1 after five ends before going on to win 20-13.

Iain Boyle, Gordon Smith, Sue Kirkpatrick and Shirley Stacey also had an easy win after a good opening, which saw them 6-1 ahead before winning 19-13 win. York now play the winners of the Hornsea versus Scarborough tie.
