A CONTROVERSIAL block of flats described by one York resident as "more suitable in downtown Nairobi" will be open for inspection this weekend.

Home-buyers are being invited to look at the new five-storey block, in Walmgate, in an open day, which is being held on Saturday.

The development, located behind Mawson's Court, sparked a row between the developers, Pocklington-based The Helmsley Group, and some local architects, who claimed its unusual design was an eyesore.

Now people will be able to judge the £100,000 apartments for themselves between 10.30am and 3.30pm.

The two-bedroom apartments are rendered in a peach colour, have Danish windows and doors and aluminium roofs.

John Reeves, managing director of The Helmsley Group, said: "Mawson's Court is an innovative development of eight apartments located in a private courtyard just off Walmgate. Its contemporary design prompted some criticism from traditionalists but we are convinced there is a market for such stunning living accommodation in York."

The flats also come with seven parking spaces behind a gated entranceway, and cycle storage.

But while the developers claim the design is "visually stunning", York residents have been quick to criticise.

One, Brian Howard, of Fishergate, referred to the flats as "mind-blowingly awful". He said: "They look like kit jobs. They would look more suitable in downtown Nairobi."

People who cannot make the open day will be given further opportunities to view the flats.

Appointment times can be arranged through Carter Jonas on 01904 558200 and Hudson Moody on 01904 629629.
